The skin condition vitiligo causes white spots to appear on the body for several years.  It is caused by a lack low level of melanin, the pigment in the skin.

Pigment loss can occur anywhere on your body, including

  • sun-exposed regions such as the hands, feet, arms, and face 
  • within the mouth or other mucous membranes.
  • The ear’s hearing system
  • Genitals

  • back of the eye

If it affects your hair, it may also become grey or white.

What are the symptoms of vitiligo?

  • Color changes in the retina, 
  • There is a loss of color in the nose and mouth.

Different types of vitiligo

Segmental: 

Segmental VitThey mainly appears on areas of the body that are exposed to the sun, such as the neck, nose, face, and hands. It is nonuniform and spreads quickly. It is more stable and consistent than Non-segmental. This is a rare condition and occurs in less than 10% of cases. This disease is most common in nerve-attached areas. Generally, it occurs in young adults.

Non-Segmental:

This is known as Non-segmental. This happens in 90% of cases. These patches are uniform on both sides. They mostly appear on sun-exposed body parts such as the neck, nose, face, and hands. In non-segmental, there are five types:

Generalized:

These patches can appear anywhere on the body and are not limited in size or shape. Usually, this type is the most common.

Acrofacial:

This type of white patches mainly on the fingers, toes, and hands.

Mucosal:

It appears as a white spot around the lips or mucous membrane.

Universal:

If vitiligo covers almost all parts of the body, then it is universal.

Focal:

There are white patches that appear intermittently on a body after which they disappear, and they are mostly found in children. This is called focal.

What are the Complications of Vitiligo?

The following conditions might be more likely to occur in people with vitiligo:

  • Sunburn
  • Hearing loss
  • Distress due to social or psychological factors
  • Eye problems

How does vitiligo diagnose?

To diagnose, the doctor will evaluate a family and medical history, a physical exam, and testing. Your doctor may ask some questions to diagnose vitiligo skin disease, such as:

  • Have any family members been affected by vitiligo?
  • Did you suffer from any physical illness or stress?
  • Is any member of your family afflicted by an autoimmune disease?
  • Did you experience a rash, sunburn, or anything else on your skin before the white patches appeared?
  • Do you have sun sensitivity?
  • Have you ever noticed that your hair is graying before you turn 35?

The doctor will perform a physical assessment to rule out any other medical issues. The following tests might be conducted:

  • To examine the affected skin, a small sample is taken from the affected area (biopsy)
  • An eye exam.
  • Blood tests

Treatment for Vitiligo

A quick recovery is seen on parts of the skin such as the face, chest, arms, and legs. Furthermore, hands, wrists, feet, and hips are less likely to recover after treatment. A treatment option is:

  • Drafting of non-cultured epidermal cells
  • Light therapy
  • Micro tattooing
  • Laser therapy
  • Steroid Creams
  • Depigmentation Therapy

Vitiligo is not always inherited. However, around 30% of those with vitiligo have at least one close family who also has vitiligo
